A 10 minute ferry ride from Downtown takes you to Auckland's only true 'marine village'. The Royal New Zealand Navy operates a base in Devonport and several historic sites are connected to the town's military past. Twin volcanic peaks, Mount Victoria and North Head were both significant in early New Zealand history.
Mt Victoria was once the site of a Maori Pa (fortified encampment) and North Head was an artillery battery with tunnels, chambers and gun emplacements built in 1885 to defend Auckland from invasion. The only invasion apparent today are the thousands of visitors who enjoy all that Devonport has to offer Nineteenth century architecture blends with stylish restaurants, bars, galleries, museums and shops all creating a modern village culture.
Come for a coffee or dine out in Devonport and cruise back to the breathtaking sight of the city lights reflected in one of the world's loveliest harbours.
